'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Season 1 Begins Production

The official Star Trek Instagram shared that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy officially began production on August 26! The caption for the news read “School is in session, cadets! Today marks the official start of production as The Star Trek Stage welcomes Starfleet Academy.” The show will focus on young cadets studying at Starfleet Academy to train as Starfleet’s next leaders. 

The Starfleet Academy cast photos posted to Instagram include Holly Hunter, Kerrice Brooks, Karim Diane, George Hawkins, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Zoë Steiner, and Robert Picardo (The Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Prodigy). Guest stars present for the first day of production include Oded Fehr (Admiral Charles Vance in Star Trek: Discovery), Paul Giamatti (cast as the main antagonist), and Gina Yashere.

Co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau are included in the photo as well as executive producers Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, and Frank Siracusa. Notably missing from the photos were guest stars Tig Notaro and Mary Wiseman, both reprising their roles from Discovery as Jett Reno and Sylvia Tilly respectively. Also not present was Gaia Violo, who wrote the series premiere, among other additional executive producers.

Starfleet Academy is the first show or movie in the Star Trek franchise to focus on Academy students and instructors, led by Holly Hunter, playing a Starfleet captain and chancellor of the Academy. This show will see the young minds of Starfleet come together through trials, hope, optimism, friendships, rivalries, and love from all over the Federation.
