Stunt design is finally getting its due in a new category set to debut at the 100th Oscars Ceremony. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that a new category honoring stunt design in movies released in 2027 will be introduced at the Oscars in 2028.

"We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion." Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang stated in a joint statement.

The exact rules and eligibility will be determined by the Academy’s board of governors and executive leadership at a later date. David Leitch, a stuntman turned filmmaker known for Deadpool 2, celebrated the news on his Instagram.

Leitch and Chris O’Hara (stunt actor and coordinator known for Jurassic World and Venom among several other films) led the charge to implement the category into the Oscars, making several presentations to the board before it was approved. This is a huge move for the Academy, as it represents over 100 stunt professionals in its Production and Technology branch alongside the actors, writers, producers, and directors it represents. In addition, this is not the only new category that has been introduced to the Oscars in recent memory, as last year, it was announced that the Achievement in Casting will be present at the 98th Academy Awards next year.
