'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Jon Watts Signs Directing Deal With Disney
Jon Watts' directorial debut was Clown in 2014, but it wasn’t until an indie film at the Sundance Festival that he was discovered. His film Cop Car caught the attention of Disney and Marvel executives, and he was chosen to direct the Tom Holland trilogy of Spider-Man movies. The last film in that trilogy, No Way Home, is considered by many as the film that brought the cinemas back after the pandemic. Now, director Watts, along with producer Diane McGunigle, have signed a first-look feature deal with Disney. As part of the deal, Watts will direct feature-length films for Disney and 20th Century and will have the option to produce.
David Greenbaum, president of Disney and 20th Century Studios, praised Watts’ accomplishments, “Jon Watts is a truly gifted filmmaker who brings spectacle, humor and heart to whatever he does.” Watts was just as excited, recalling his past experiences with Disney. He said, “I’ve already had an incredible experience working with Alan Bergman, Kathy Kennedy, Kevin Feige, and the rest of the Disney team, and I’m thrilled to now be partnering with the brilliantly creative David Greenbaum. David has exceptional taste and deep filmmaking knowledge, and I’m excited to work with him and his team to create memorable, director-driven theatrical experiences.” Watts’ latest film, Wolfs, releases on Apple TV+ on September 27. He is also behind the upcoming Star Wars project Skeleton Crew, which comes to Disney Plus on December 3.
