Although the WGA strike is wrapped up and SAG-AFTRA seems on the verge of a fair deal, a group of video game developers are preparing to unionize. Game developers who work for CD Projekt, the team behind Cyberpunk 2077, and other Polish studios have decided to unionize through the Polish Gamedev Workers Union (PGWU). The move to unionize comes after three rounds of layoffs at the Cyberpunk 2077 studios. According to the developers, their goal is “improving their workplace/industry standards in a way that has legal power and amplifies their voices.”

The union said that the layoffs “created a tremendous amount of stress and insecurity, affecting our mental health and leading to the creation of this union in response. Having a union means more security, transparency, better protection, and a stronger voice in times of crisis.”

PGWU clarified its goals, “Our mission as a union is to ensure job security, fair treatment, and transparency within our employer organizations. We intend to achieve that by mutual support, education, and establishing equal communication with the employers as a strong voice for the workers’ interests. Our goal is not to start a fight but to have a dialogue.” The union is inviting any Polish developers at any stage of employment - unemployed, contractor, or searching for work - to join PGWU.
