Do you remember Cyberpunk 2077 and how it was one of the most unfortunate releases of 2020? Recently, Cyberpunk 2077 has gone through one of the most exciting comebacks for a video game and is now trending following the release of its prologue Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

The Difficult Early Days Of Night City

Since its announcement at the E3 of 2012, Cyberpunk’s journey has been rather interesting for the Warsaw-based studio, CD Projekt Red. When it was initially announced, the game hyped the gaming community with its realism and new Blade Runner-inspired universe. After the release of big RPG games like The Last of Us Part II, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077 was set to end 2020 on a big note, becoming one of the most promising games of the role-playing genre. Unexpectedly, when the game was finally released, the sound of discontent consumers after seeing how glitched and unplayable the game was on console, pushed Sony to pull the game from sale on its digital Playstation store and offer refunds to anyone who had purchased it. Funny enough, early reviewers missed these issues because the studio had given them the more stable PC version. For that reason, many people still purchased the game.

Recently, CD Projekt announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has been played by 1 million players each day last week, and sold 20 million copies. The studio tweeted its excitement and thankfulness for the community’s patience and support:

“Each day of this week Night City has been visited by 1 million players, both new and returning. We wanted to use this opportunity to thank you for being with us and playing the game. Thanks, Chooms!”

As promised, after the failure that was the release of the game, the studio kept on fixing the game, update after update. However, according to Den of Nerds, the best way to play the game today is still via PC due to the lack of improvement made on consoles, especially on PS4 and Xbox One where the experience remained practically the same. Nonetheless, despite the issues, the studio also announced a DLC, Phantom Liberty, set to be released in 2023 on the same platform that the original game was released.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a dystopian piece of work inspired by Mike Pondsmith’s role-playing board game Cyberpunk 2020 (1988). It puts you in the shoes of a hacker in the city of Night City, a place that awes you through its realism and its liveliness. The uniqueness and the quality of the production of the game have allowed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to stand on its own.

Released on Netflix on September 13th of 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners succeeds in adding much more to the game than one could think. The fact that its story is set before the events of the game adds much more depth to the latter. Subsequently, in addition to multiple Easter eggs and nods to the game, you will also find familiar locations and characters such as the Afterlife Bar and Adam Smasher. In a way, if the Edgerunners series make someone want to become an edgerunner, the video game is what allows that person to fulfill that desire.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is now available to stream on Netflix.
