New Discless PS5 Slim Has Odd Online Connection Requirement
As many gamers wait for the upcoming release of Sony’s Playstation 5, a critical and concerning leak has become known to the general public. It is known with PlayStation 5, the disc drive will be swappable, which will permit users to remove and connect as they prefer. However, after reviewing the upcoming slimmer redesign, it lists a required internet connection for the gaming system’s Blu-Ray player setup.
The leak became known as retailers began to fill the soon-to-be empty shelves with the console. CharlieIntel initially broke the story with images of the system’s disclaimer: "Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.”

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman tweeted, “Uhhhh…if this is the case, that is highly concerning and very strange. Hardware connectivity shouldn’t be determined by a server that may not always be available.”
It is still being determined whether an internet connection will be necessary beyond the initial setup for the console after the console and disc drive are paired. Fans are nervous that this may mean the PS5 will be unable to read discs one day. If this were the case, the era of the gaming disc may be over, which will lead to more questions of ownership once a player “purchases” a game on the system.
While others are concerned, some fans believe this is an attempt to thwart piracy or ransomware. Jon Doyle, CEO of Lost in Cult, noted how Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes it illegal to “circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work.”
The PS5 is set to release on November 8 with the standard model with a disc drive for a whopping $500 SRP, with the all-digital console priced toward $450 with the optional stand-alone disc drive priced around $80. Sony has made fans aware after all current PS5 consoles are sold out, only slim, disc-free consoles will be available for purchase.
