‘The Fall Of The House Of Usher’ Spoiler-Free Review
If you have been on social media in the last few weeks then you have probably heard about Mike Flanagan’s newest hit, The Fall of the House of Usher. It has been sitting at number one on Netflix’s charts since it was released on October 12, and it is easy to see why. The mini-series is an absolute masterpiece and one that should be on everyone’s watchlist. It features some familiar faces in the Flanagan universe such as Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, and Kate Siegel, and we saw a few new faces that I hope we will see in future Flanagan projects.
This is the first of Flanagan’s series that I have seen, but I can say I am now ready to binge every single show he has ever made! It is hard to put into words just how amazing this series is without listing spoilers, so I am going to do my best! The series kept me on the edge of my seat, which is hard to do because I love horror, and I feel like I know what to expect early on in a project. I could not have been more wrong with this series! There are so many twists and turns, but the very best part of this series is the phenomenal storytelling. Each character within the Usher family and their close circle is unique and brings something different to the show. My favorite Usher was Camille because she was an absolute powerhouse. This is officially labeled a horror miniseries, but after seeing it in its entirety, I would label it a tragedy because it brings far more to the table than simply just scares.

The eight-episode mini-series reimagines eight of Edgar Allen Poe’s most recognizable tales and features countless references to some of his other works. It follows the Usher family as they are put on trial for their many illegal deeds. As each Usher does their best to help their family and themselves, a mysterious presence begins to pick them off one by one. Each death is gruesome and specifically relates to who the person was during their life. As the family is picked off, siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher are forced to return to their past to try to find a way to stop the deaths before the entire Usher bloodline is dead. The final episode of the series feels like it moves 90 miles per hour, and it speeds toward an unforgettable ending. I appreciated the structure of the episodes and the fact that there were no plot holes. Episode one introduces us to the main players, episodes two through seven focus on the death of a different person and give us a bit of the past, and then episode eight answers every question we had through the first seven episodes. I wish more shows were structured like this, especially mini-series.
The casting for this project was absolutely flawless. Mark Hamill plays the Usher family’s lawyer and shows a more gritty side to him that we typically only get through his voice-acting roles. The star of the show though is easily Carla Gugino who plays the Raven, but she also plays different roles in each episode. The depth that she brings to this character is second to none, and there is one specific moment towards the end of episode eight where she will absolutely shatter your heart. The ending of this show is truly spectacular and will stay with you for days!
