New Details Shared About 'Star Wars: Outlaws'
While the expected release window is still pretty far out, news about Massive Entertainment’s highly-anticipated game Star Wars: Outlaws has been trickling out. Recently, Creative Director Julian Gerighty spoke to EDGE Magazine about the game, sharing a bit of interesting information regarding the game. In particular, Gerighty talked about the planets.
Since the game is an open-world one, the setting is very important. Gerighty explained, “In comparison, the size of one planet might be about equivalent to two or three zones in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey.” That is to say, the planets are massive, leaving a lot to explore and interact in. Just traveling through one of them will feel like a “journey.”

The planets themselves are not only massive but uniquely crafted as well. Gerighty confirmed that they are “handcrafted” rather than entire templates and auto-generated masses. The feel and design of the areas are meant to be reminiscent of the timeline point for the game, in between Episode V and Episode VI through technology developed by Massive. In terms of flying between the planets though, there won’t be “total free rein”; designated spots for flying will still be present.
Encounters will focus on a “full freedom approach”, though. There will also be a Reputation system in place, meaning that if you’re in poor relations with a faction they can hunt you down; on the flip side, if things are going well, the player can access special quests and areas. Kay Vess, the protagonist of the game, has a droid companion ND-5 whose design is from the Prequel era. Trailblazer, the ship of the game, is meant to be “very, very simple.” Finally, Nix, Vess’s alien companion, will be directable by the player. He can do things like create distractions and trigger out-of-reach buttons.
The release date for Star Wars: Outlaws has yet to be confirmed; however, 2024 is the target release year. Outlaws will be the franchise's first true open-world Star Wars game, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It will utilize the Snowdrop Engine, a game engine from Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft. According to Ubisoft, “If you’re willing to take the risk, the galaxy is full of opportunity.” The game will be available for PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 at this time.
