Child’s play could mean the difference between life and death. When the first season of Netflix’s Squid Game premiered on September 17, 2021, the carefree use of childhood games the contestants played contrasted with the literal life-or-death situation of survival of the fittest. The difference now is that a familiar face has come back not only to win but to try and save others from suffering through all he had to. Former contestant Seong Gi-hun was set to live for the United States after winning the titular games, but the season one cliffhanger saw him leave the airport in hopes of discovering who the real controllers of the Squid Games are.

With plenty of characters set to be killed and the stakes of the games being raised to 45.6 billion won, it’s no longer about the money for Gi-hun. Gi-hun could have easily used his winnings to get out of his gambling debt and get custody of his daughter, but according to ScreenRant, his return to the games is “personal”. The second season of Squid Game continues its exploration of not just the money but also themes of morality and wealth inequality. Gi-hun survived once before, but it’s unclear from the trailer if lightning will strike twice for the man. Despite having an advantage in how the game works, the controllers of the game are powerful enough to reduce Gi-hun to just another won.
