MCU Introduces First Ever Original Hero

Marvel’s What If…? is set to continue a trend in its third season. The second season introduced the first original hero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Mohawk superhero Kahhori. Much of the season focused on her people and how they gained power, setting her up as the main hero of the arc. Now, season three will introduce another original character, Byrdie. Not much is known about the character, but the recent trailer shows the character using her wings to fly and shooting beams out of her eyes. The new character will make history in another way. Byrdie is played by Natasha Lyonne, who has been cast in an undisclosed role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This means that Lyonne will debut in the MCU as an original character in the animated What If…? before appearing in a canon film.
Even though What If...? isn’t canon, the series presents opportunities to introduce audiences to new characters, and nothing is stopping Marvel from including those characters in upcoming projects. What If…? imagines odd situations that would stem from changing certain key moments in the timeline or certain key aspects of characters, so the entire project is ripe for experimentation. The third season premieres on Disney+ on December 22, 2024.
