With the recent launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Game Pass, we are starting to see the effects of the Microsoft acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, which was finalized over a year ago. Since then, there’s been frequent speculation about the future of Xbox and whether there would be other consoles, given their frequent statements that they are open to any franchise being released on other consoles.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, talked about that future and even talked about the much-rumored Xbox handheld.

The phrase of the hour is that any such handheld is “a few years out.” Elaborating on this further, Spencer talked about the research and development team watching the market closely to shape its vision of a handheld, working on prototypes so that when the moment arrives, they do so in a manner that works best. Spencer loves the idea of working on devices and said, “…I think our team could do some real innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now.” All of this is of course, following the relatively successful launch of the Playstation Portal, a $200 handheld that allows players to stream games from their Playstation to their hands.

With the potential release of a handheld being a few years out, Spencer said they were focusing their current attention on perfecting the Xbox app. Xbox recently launched a new ad campaign highlighting how nearly any connected device can be an “Xbox”, and their work on the app only serves to further this campaign.

The state of the video game industry has been in flux since the COVID bump ended, and there’s been a long-running slew of layoffs within the industry. Xbox had a showcase back in June that laid out some of the plans for Xbox going forward, and they’re seemingly really leaning into the cross-platform, play-anywhere approach while still making consoles. This news about prototypes for a handheld only seems to confirm Xbox’s commitment to gaming.
