D23 Brazil, Disney’s fan-focused event brought to São Paulo, has brought a fair bit of news, some of which was related to the Percy Jackson television series. The upcoming season will be based on the second book in the series, which means even more gods and goddesses will be featured. During the event, the casting for Athena was revealed! Andra Day will be stepping into the goddess of wisdom and warfare strategy’s shoes.

Day is a musician and actress best known for roles such as Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021), herself in Bel Air (2024), and Sweet Tea in Cars 3 (2017). On the music side of her career, one of Day’s best-known songs is her 2015 quadruple platinum hit "Rise Up". Athena is Annabeth’s mother, and her first appearance in the books is through a vision triggered by Sirens in The Sea of Monsters; whether that will remain the same in the second season has yet to be revealed.

The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently aiming for a 2025 release, though a specific date has not been announced. According to author Rick Riordan in his blog’s November update, season two is still in the filming stage and will be for a little while, though a brief new look can be found here. The author also stated that “this season will be even better, bigger, funnier, faster and wilder than season one.” To catch up on where the series left off, the entire first season is available to stream on Disney+.
