James Mangold Talks About How He Feels With Wolverine Being In 'Deadpool 3'

James Mangold was the director behind the film Logan. Set in 2029, no new mutants had been born to the public in a couple of decades due to genetically modified food. Logan is getting older, and his mutation has been slowing down, but he is called to action once more to help a young mutant escape to Canada. It ended with Logan finding peace, but that wasn’t the end for the character on the silver screen. In an interview with Variety, the director shared his feelings on Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being featured in Deadpool 3.

Mangold explained, "I can't say that there's a part of me that doesn't wish that we'd let it be. But there was always going to be another Wolverine.” He continued, summarizing the way the character would never fully die, “There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they're going to try to.” The director ended his statement on a lighter note, “I don't measure my success on a movie like Logan with whether we ended the conversation. I ended my conversation."

Logan was released in 2017, two years before Disney gained access to the X-Men characters. The film takes inspiration from the Old Man Logan comics, following the titular aged character as he goes on one last mutant-related mission. From the score to the dialog to the cameos, it was a beautiful end to the character in Fox’s timeline. It can be streamed on Disney+ and rented or purchased on popular platforms, including the Google Play store.

The release date for Deadpool 3 has changed several times. At the moment, it is set for May 4, 2024, about six months earlier than the previous date. It will take place in the MCU, though the extent is unknown. The R-rating will stay true to the previous Fox films.
