HBO’s five-episode first season of the drama series, The Idol has not been renewed to come back for further seasons. The decision to cancel was not made hastily. In addition to many apparent production issues and changes, as well as negative reviews from critics, it appears that viewership waxed and waned throughout the weeks from its debut. In April of 2022, the series was about halfway through production when there was an abrupt exit of the show by director and executive producer, Amy Seimetz as well as several members of the cast. That change alone resulted in show co-creator, Sam Levinson directing the season himself.

Lily-Rose Depp plays a character who is a pop star and falls for Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye’s character who is the owner of a Hollywood club. The plot centers on the complicated relationship between the two. HBO released an official statement on the cancellation of the series: “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
