New 'Sonic Superstars' Preview Highlights Updates To An Iconic Genre
Sonic Superstars, the upcoming 2.5D Classic Sonic sidescroller, was recently shown off at this year's Gamescom. This led to several of the gaming press getting the chance to play the game for the first time, and the reception has been mostly positive. The physics and gameplay are firmly rooted in the past, but the game does have a few updates to the classic formula. Players can choose to play as either Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy. Each character has unique abilities, as highlighted in several of the hands-on previews from Gamescom. Sonic has his trademark speed and can use the drop dash introduced in 2017's Sonic Mania, Tails and Knuckles can hover or float to make platforming easier, and Amy Rose can double jump and attack enemies with her Piko Piko Hammer.
The characters also have Emerald powers including making clones of themselves, swimming up waterfalls, and being able to see hidden stage elements. These powers can be selected from a radial menu assigned to the right thumbstick and can be used at any time. Co-op play was also highlighted during these previews. Up to four players can play the main campaign at once. Polygon's Michael McWhertar recounts that his "poor co-op buddy" spent most of his time respawning as he sprinted through the stage, noting that the game's speed can lead to some chaotic fun. A new trailer was also released to highlight this aspect of the gameplay in addition to the battle mode.
All in all, it seems like Sonic Superstars has a lot to offer fans of the series when it speeds onto all major platforms on October 17th of this year.
