Ridley Scott Has A Four-Hour Cut Of 'Napoleon'

This November, the next Ridley Scott epic releases with Napoleon, a historical biopic about the legendary French revolutionary military leader who rose to a position of power and manipulated his way to becoming an emperor. Known for his work delivering spectacular historical epics, like Gladiator (which is getting a sequel), Kingdom of Heaven, and American Gangster. Now, with his latest running at over two-and-a-half hours, it has come out that Scott has more he would love to show. In the September issue of Empire magazine, Ridley Scott reveals that he has a cut of the movie that is over four-and-a-half hours, and has more of Joséphine’s (Napoleon’s wife) life before she met him.
He goes on to say that he would love for Apple, the main financier of the film, to eventually release the cut. It would be like the history buff version of the Snyder Cut of Justice League. Napoleon’s story is rather fitting for such a run time. He was tasked with command during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution. When France was threatened with invasion, Napoleon was one of the leaders the French turned to so it could hold back the forces of Austria, Great Britain, and other powers of the European continent intent on preventing the democratic fervor from spreading to their lands.

He went on to crown himself Emperor and conquered much of Europe or placed them under France’s yolk, and then he set his sights beyond Europe. While he had successes in North Africa, he struggled against the British Navy, and faced one of his greatest defeats against Russia, losing almost all of his army to the frigid Russian winter. In the end, Napoleon lost power and was sent into exile, twice, dying at the age of 51 on the island of St. Helena during his second exile.
It’s a staggering ambition, especially given the current climate of cinema. Browse the internet and one can find plenty of rumblings about the length of movies of late. Avatar: The Way of Water ran over three hours, as did Babylon, and The Batman came just shy of three hours. The Snyder Cut ran around six hours in total, split into three parts. That’s a long time for anyone to sit and watch a movie.
For the theatrical cut, people will be able to see it this November 22.
