Shawn Levy, director of the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film sat down with Deadline’s Pete Hammond for an in-depth interview. The new film has the benefit of being the only Marvel film in 2024. Levy mentioned that he wanted the movie to be a return to the theatrical experience that has seen a decline since the pandemic. Levy called Hugh Jackman the greatest gift for the film. More than just a sequel, the movie becomes a buddy comedy with the pair at each other’s throats in the vein of A Midnight Run or 48 Hours.

Levy discussed how the Deadpool franchise has no rules but has “tonal audacity” built into its core. The director affirmed how the friendship between the three- Levy, Jackman, and Ryan Reynolds who plays Deadpool- helps to maintain the comedic element. He said, “If you work with friends, you don’t mind making an ass of yourself and if you’re working on something that’s comedic, you better be willing to fall on your face.” The willingness to be embarrassed led to creative comedic moments.

Levy also talked about directing All The Light We Cannot See. He wanted authenticity and sent out a global casting call looking for a blind girl and blind woman to play lead roles. It became a learning experience for the actors and the directors as they learned how to act for a camera and Levy learned how to be more intentional with his directions. Levy recalled a moment when the older actress mentioned that she didn’t know what her face looked like as she’d never seen it. This interaction prompted Levy to change the way he directed to accommodate the actress.

Hammond asked Levy about his Star Wars movie. Levy is developing one and has been in exciting talks with the heads of the franchise, but nothing is confirmed yet. Finally, the pair talked about season 5 of Stranger Things. Levy mentioned that directing some of each season has been “a huge part of his creative life.” The Netflix show launched a play that recently won an Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment. Deadpool & Wolverine comes to theaters on July 26, 2024, while All The Light We Cannot See and the first four seasons of Stranger Things are currently filming on Netflix.
