Mel Brooks And Josh Gad Are Coming Together To Create A 'Spaceballs' Sequel
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) confirmed that a sequel to the iconic 1987 Star Wars parody film Spaceballs is in the works and quickly shared the details that are known at this time on social media. Josh Gad is teaming up with Mel Brooks to bring the project to fruition.
Spaceballs cinematic debut was roughly a decade after George Lucus’ Star Wars: A New Hope hit the box office. The original satire starred Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga, with Joan Rivers lending her voice to C-3PO’s comedic counterpart. The original Spaceballs garnered a mixed bag of reviews, with one by THR that read, “Science-fiction fans, never known for their sense of humor, will trickle out for an initial peek but, otherwise, box office for this wildly uneven MGM takeoff seems limited to young boys.” Little did anyone know that this satiric gem would become the cult classic it is today and be widely regarded as one of Mel Brooks’ career-defining films.

Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez are crafting the script. Josh Greenbaum is overseeing the comedy. Josh Gads teased the film earlier this month in an Instagram post that included a photo of the script with certain sections blocked out. The caption said, “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited.” The caption included his delight in working with Samit and Hernandez saying that “[it] has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”
Spaceballs’ sequel is under the care of Amazon MGM Studios, with Gad, Brooks, and Kevin Salter as executive producers. As the project progresses, more plot details will likely be released to the media. Until then, May The Schwartz Be With You.
