Deadpool Is The Key To A Marvel/DC Crossover Film

These days, it’s rare to see a superhero film with only one hero. Both Marvel and DC churn out movies focusing on the Avengers and the Justice League. Even solo films often see their heroes teaming up with others. However, there’s one crossover project that’s been left untouched, at least at the cinemas. Fans of the superhero genre would love to see Marvel and DC heroes team up on the big screen, and there’s only one character who can make that happen.
The two film franchises have largely been separate from each other, but the title character in Deadpool 2 references DC characters and the DC Extended Universe itself. Deadpool’s main power is regenerative healing, but his most iconic power is his ability to break the fourth wall. He knows that he’s a comic book or movie character, meaning he knows about everything in his universe and the real world. Deadpool’s knowledge of the real world gives him a unique perspective about what’s possible. While laws of the multiverse prevent other characters from even imagining the DC Universe, Deadpool knows the only real obstacle separating the worlds is copyright. Deadpool doesn’t have the power to bridge the universes but his knowledge would be handy in explaining who everybody is to the other characters and could be a source of much of the film’s humor as Deadpool shows off his iconic Merc with a Mouth persona during the exposition.

Deadpool 3 will see Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool teaming up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine bridging the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Fox’s X-Men movies. Deadpool could easily do the same thing with DC. Some multiversal hijinks could see Deadpool thrown into the DCEU and bringing some heroes, or maybe even villains, back with him to the MCU. While Deadpool may be the narrative key to bringing the two cinematic universes together, in the real world that key may be James Gunn. After completing work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the director turned his focus to creating movies for the DCEU. In fact, Gunn mentioned an eventual possibility of a crossover in an interview with Empire Magazine back in June 2023. Gunn said, “I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”
The main difficulty with bridging the two cinematic universes is separating them again after the main event. For obvious reasons, a cinematic Marvel/DC crossover would have to be a one-time event. Most characters would have to forget the event to restore continuity to both franchises. However, Deadpool would be the exception and could make constant references to the event that leaves his companions confused.

Because of the real-world separation of the MCU and the DCEU, a crossover event couldn’t be taken seriously, especially as the most recent Marvel films and shows continue to incorporate effects of Thano’s snap, known as the blip in-universe. The continuity of both franchises requires the event to be non-canon or at least unknown to a majority of the characters. Deadpool, being a hero who rarely takes things seriously, is the perfect character to bring the universe's together. Ironically, Deadpool’s knowledge of the world beyond would help him keep the secret of the universes colliding. A Marvel/DC crossover film is still a ways off in the future, but stranger things have happened. With a precedent in the comics, and Gunn working on films in both franchises, anything is possible, especially if the Merc with a Mouth is involved.
