Disney v FCC over DEI

The Federal Communications Commission, FCC, has informed Disney that they will soon start investigating the DEI efforts of the Walt Disney Company and its ABC unit after recently initiating a similar examination of Comcast.

Brendan Carr, whom the then President-elect Donal Trump picked as the chairman of the FCC back in November, wrote a letter to Disney CEO Bob Iger, stating: "For decades, Disney focused on churning out box office and programming successes. But then something changed. Disney has now been embroiled in rounds of controversy surrounding its DEI policies."

According to the FCC, the Investigation aims to "ensure that Disney and ABC have not been violating FCC equal employment opportunity regulations by promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination."

Disney acknowledged the receipt of the letter and stated that they "...look forward to engaging with the commission to answer its questions".

Disney is not the first company feeling governmental pressure to end its "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" efforts. On January 21, Trump signed an executive order stating that "...critical and influential institutions of American society, including the Federal Government, major corporations, financial institutions, the medical industry, large commercial airlines, law enforcement agencies, and institutions of higher education have adopted and actively use dangerous, demeaning, and immoral race- and sex-based preferences under the guise of so-called “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) or “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” (DEIA) that can violate the civil-rights laws of this Nation."

As a consequence, the president ordered "...all executive departments and agencies (agencies) to terminate all discriminatory and illegal preferences, mandates, policies, programs, activities, guidance, regulations, enforcement actions, consent orders, and requirements.  I further order all agencies to enforce our longstanding civil-rights laws and to combat illegal private-sector DEI preferences, mandates, policies, programs, and activities."

Following this order, big companies like Amazon, Google, McDonald's, Meta, Target, and Walmart have started to roll back or at least scale back their DEI programs. At the same time, other enterprises like Costco, Microsoft, and Delta Airlines continue to support DEI and have no intention of changing or abandoning the respective programs. At Apple's recent shareholder meeting, a majority of shareholders voted against a proposal to consider abolishing its Inclusion & Diversity policies and goals.

"We strive to create a culture of belonging where everyone can do their best work," was the official answer of the world's most valuable company after the proposal had been voted down.
