Colman Domingo Set To Direct And Star In Nat King Cole Biopic

Colman Domingo is running full steam ahead after his Oscar nomination for his role as Bayard Rustin in the eponymous biopic Rustin. Previously, Domingo got his start with Broadway roles and then continued his fame with television performances, like on Fear the Walking Dead and Euphoria, and other movie roles, such as Zola and The Color Purple. He announced recently that he will direct and star in a movie about the life of singer Nat King Cole. 

Cole was an American icon famous for his jazz tunes like “Nature Boy,” “Smile,” and “Let There Be Love,” selling over 50 million records. Nat King Cole died of cancer at 45 years old in 1965. After his death, he was honored with the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990. A decade later, Cole was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This film will be Domingo’s directorial debut in the film industry, though he has directed episodes of Fear the Walking Dead in the past. He also co-wrote the script for this upcoming movie musical. Not many details have been released about the untitled film yet, including what years of the legendary musician’s life will be the focus. The movie is currently in the pre-production phase.

Nat King Cole’s renowned life has been a passion of Colman Domingo’s professional work for a while now. Domingo and Patricia McGregor co-wrote the stage musical, Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole, with McGregor directing. Lights Out premiered at People’s Light in Pennsylvania in 2017 before a short release two years later at the Geffen Playhouse in California. Dulé Hill played Cole in this interpretation, which also starred Gisela Adisa as Eartha Kitt and Daniel J. Watts as Sammy Davis, Jr.
