The Directors Guild of America successfully bartered for some alterations to their original contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. This is an interesting outcome. The original new contract had been ratified with overwhelming support in June 2023, avoiding a strike. Rather than wait until the expiration date came back around and a new contract negotiation period began, the DGA and AMPTP quietly returned to the negotiation table behind the scenes.

The additions to their contract include an increased employer contribution to the health or pension plan by half a percent for the second and third year of the contract term, a better pay rate for assistant directors and unit project managers for the pilot and first two seasons of a show, and a wage increase for directors of SVOD programs with an extensive budget and pay TV dramas to match their peers. One of the most notable additions is a series bonus for directors whose show is a top performer on streaming platforms; this is on par with what the Writers Guild of America bartered for during their strike.

In a statement to Deadline, a DGA spokesperson explained,

“For almost nine decades, the DGA has fought to protect and extend the creative and economic rights of directors and members of the directorial team. Understanding the urgent needs of our members after a difficult year, we’re proud to have achieved these gains and protected the Guild’s Pension and Health Plans. We will never stop fighting on behalf of our members.”
