Animated Adaptation Of 'Nimona' Finally Scores A Summer Release Window On Netflix
The highly-anticipated (and much-delayed) animated adaptation of the award-winning graphic novel Nimona by N.D. Stevenson finally has a release window. While a specific date has yet to be announced, it was confirmed that Nimona will stream on Netflix in June 2023.
The titular character, voiced by Chloe-Grace Moretz, will finally make its way to streaming after several years of development and production setbacks. Originally, Blue Sky Studios (Rio, Ice Age) was set to bring the story to life. However, since 20th Century Fox Studios owned it, the animation division was given the chop when Disney purchased Fox in 2019, effectively shelving Nimona (which was more than halfway through production) and other projects.

Thankfully, the streaming giant swept in and announced that with Annapurna Pictures, they were going to see the film to completion and release it on Netflix. Co-Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane will helm the adaptation. Rounding out the voice cast is Rogue One’s Riz Ahmed, Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), and RuPaul Charles (RuPaul’s Drag Race), along with several others.
Nimona represents so much in the LGBTQIA+ community, including a production team that is incredibly diverse and has characters whose identities are fluid. It also features explicit same-sex affection, which is a milestone for a large streaming platform. Although several images have been released, an official trailer is not available. But if you’re looking to find out what happens, there’s always the physical graphic novel.
