HBO’s The Last of Us was a huge success. Starring Pedro Pascal in the role of Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey in the role of Ellie, the show has been hailed as one of the best video game adaptations ever. Both the game and show have their share of emotional moments, but also happy ones. Each moment is important to the overall story and as well as gives us some backstory of the characters. These are some of the best moments from the first season of The Last Of Us.

TRIGGER WARNING: MENTION OF SUICIDE AND DEATH

5. Ellie Killing David

David gave off a creepy vibe right when we first saw him. His story did not change much from game to screen either. He was a preacher that was also the leader of a group of people. Turns out, they have a secret. The mystery meat they have been eating is actually human flesh.

Ellie encountered David and James (played the Troy Baker, Joel’s game actor) while she is out trying to get food for her and a sick Joel. David kidnapped her and put her in a cage. Things were not looking good and she almost became their next meal until she killed James, and was able to escape. She finally got one up on David and killed him. She continued attacking him, getting out her anger, especially after what David was going to do to her. It was a very emotionally- charged moment and shows a darker side of Ellie.

4. Ellie And Riley’s Mall Excursion

This episode was originally based on the Left Behind DLC for the first game. It gave us more backstory into Ellie’s past and introduced us to Riley, who was a friend of Ellie’s. Riley took Ellie to an abandoned mall, where they had a little excursion and a few moments of happiness in the dark world. They had a fight, but eventually made up, and danced together in a Halloween store. They even confessed their feelings to each other with a kiss. Unfortunately, they both get bit and only Ellie survived. It was clearly the first time Ellie saw a mall, as evident by the wonder and awe displayed on her face.

3. First Appearance Of The Bloater

One of the biggest complaints about the show was there were not as many infected as in the game. There were definitely more when the show first started but the number slowed down as season went on, which is okay. However, this all changed in one of the later episodes with Henry and Sam. Ellie, Sam, and Henry were stopped by Kathleen, who has been chasing them. Her monologue was interrupted by a loud sound, and the ground caved in. After a moment of silence, many infected emerged along with the terrifying bloater. It was an absolutely terrifying moment.

2. Bill And Franks's Last Day

The story of these two characters was expanded on for the show. When you met Bill in the game, Frank was nowhere to be seen until later when you find him after he killed himself and left a note behind. Bill survived and ended up helping Ellie and Joel on their journey.

The show gave these characters more depth with their beautiful relationship. We saw them meet and eventually fall in love. One of the best moments of the episode was when Frank decided to have a good last day before he took some pills and never woke up again. However, over their last dinner, Bill also decided to take the pills, and they died in their bed together. It was a beautiful final moment for both of these characters, especially because they lived their life as much as they could, and were able to go out on their own terms.

1. Ellie’s Birth

Ashley Johnson, Ellie’s actress in the game, played Ellie’s mom Anna in the season finale. We saw her run into a house, where she gave birth to Ellie. It was poetic to see game Ellie Ashley Johnson give birth to show Ellie. Johnson’s superb performance added to the emotional scene as she fended off a Clicker while going through the pain of labor. Her last moments with Marlene added to the sadness felt by all.

The Last of Us show succeeded in bringing the emotions from the game to the viewers. There were not many happy moments. Even when they appeared, they were short-lived. While the show mostly stayed true to the game, there were some changes that made the show better. These were some of the best moments in the show. Even though Season 2 is far away yet, I cannot wait to see how they adapt the second game

All episodes of Season 1 of The Last Of Us are now available on HBO Max.
