Following the first teaser trailer during Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022, the official gameplay reveal trailer of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the highly anticipated sequel to the widely acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, was revealed during the 2022 Game Awards. The trailer shows a noticeably older Cal Kestis and his droid companion BD-1 discovering a mysterious person suspended in a bacta tank. Once the character is released, they say they were betrayed by the one they trusted most and that they won’t be imprisoned again. We then see Cal and BD-1 fight a multitude of enemies in a variety of locations, all while utilizing an overhauled combat system. Much like the first game from ReSpawn Entertainment, Jedi: Survivor looks gorgeous, expansive, and satisfying to play. As per usual with Star Wars trailers, this one has a number of details and wider lore connections that are fun to pick out and analyze. Here are the five major ones I’ve spotted thus far.

5. Cere And The Archives

Early on in the trailer, we see Cal approach his current Jedi Master, Cere Junda, who says Cal has been busy making himself the Empire’s most wanted. Along with a new look, Cere is seen next to what appears to be a Jedi archive containing numerous data files. Such archives have been previously seen in the Jedi Temple library. Could this be that very library, or is this just another location where Cere has been collecting information on the old Jedi Order?

4. Battle Droids

Roger, Roger. One of the primary foes we see Cal facing off against in the trailer are variations on the classic B1 battle droids from the Clone Wars. Despite the defeat of the Separatists, someone was bound to make use of the sheer number of leftover battle droids during the Empire’s reign. The introduction of battle droids opens the door to an endless number of possible droids that Cal can fight throughout the game. Personally, I’m hoping we’ll get to see him face a few droidekas along the way.

3. Forest Wampas

Apparently, even the forest is not safe from the terrifying wampa. Originally introduced in the opening of The Empire Strikes Back and seen in many Star Wars games since then, wampas are iconic creatures in Star Wars fauna. Getting to fight them in a new environment will certainly be a challenge and a way to test Cal’s endurance against the great outdoors.

2. Sentry Droids

I know, I know. I thought this was a dark trooper too, but this is, in fact, a DT-series sentry droid. This type of security droid was originally seen in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. We first see a few of them protecting a valuable treasure in the episode “The Wynkahthu Job” and later see a pair of them being used by Grand Admiral Thrawn in a sparring session. They also made a recent appearance in the current Darth Vader comics by Greg Pak. Despite the lack of a dubstep soundtrack, the sentry droids should still be a fun challenge.

1. Crossguard Lightsaber

As a final reveal, we get to see Cal wielding a crossguard lightsaber. First seen as the chosen weapon of Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy and now being wielded by Burryaga Agaburry in The High Republic publishing line, the crossguard is undoubtedly one of the coolest lightsaber designs in the current canon. I can’t wait to see how wielding a crossguard lightsaber plays in the upcoming game.

Jedi: Survivor is currently scheduled to launch on March 15, 2023 and will release the same month as the new tie-in novel from author Sam Maggs, which follows Cal and the Mantis crew on a mission set between the games. With the game being set five years after Jedi: Fallen Order, it will be interesting to see how much more difficult things will be now with the Empire tightening its grip on the galaxy. If there is anything we know about Cal Kestis, we know that he is a survivor.
