In some movies, it’s easy to know who the villain is, so much so that fans have come up with theories of who the real villain with a different perspective. Here are seven of the best fan theories about the ‘real villain’ from the internet.

7. Hook (1991) – Peter Pan

In this charming Robin Williams film about the boy who never grew up, fans believe that Hook initially was only trying to stop Pan from stealing more kids. However, when Peter arrives back in Never, Neverland as an older man, Hook assumes that Maggie and Jack have been victims of the same treatment and takes them under his wing. When Peter is in the real world, he’s an inattentive father, and it’s not until he sees his son responding to Hook as a positive male role model that he changes his behaviour.

6. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) – Ferris Bueller

In this iconic 80s film, we are supposed to believe that Mr. Rooney, the buzz-kill school Principal is the film’s antagonist. But let’s be honest, Ferris steals and destroys his friend’s car, dines and dashes, and then hijacks a parade and makes it all about himself. Egomaniac Ferris pretends his actions are for the benefit of his friend, but it only sparks a fight between Cameron and his father.

5. The Wizard Of Oz (1939) – Glinda

There’s been a lot of different adaptations of L. Frank Baum’s novel, but a fan theory is that the real villain of the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film is, in fact, Glinda, the so-called ‘good witch.’ She fails to mention that the ruby slippers are magic and could send Dorothy home anytime, but the whole movie is a set-up. It’s no surprise that Elphaba wants the shoes considering they are all that is left of her dead sister. Glinda orchestrates the clash when she places them on Dorothy’s feet. She’s also coincidently close by when the tornado falls on the Wicked Witch of The West. But if Glinda is so powerful, why did she need Dorothy to do her dirty work in the first place? Maybe it’s because she is the only character without a real-world counterpart.

 4. Jaws (1975) – Quint

Quint arrives on Amity Island and asks for a massive amount of money to hunt the shark (nicknamed Bruce by the Jaws film crew), then sits back and lets people die until the Sheriff becomes desperate enough to accept. But it’s more than his callous mercenary attitude that has made fans suspect that he, rather than the shark, is the movie’s real villain. The theory goes that Bruce only came to Amity Island to escape the shark hunter and only became a killer because he was attacked by a human in the first place. It makes no sense that Quint would take a boat and head out into the deep sea to hunt Bruce if he attacked people near the beach. The shark was leaving Amity Island to get away from Quint.

3. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) – Nate (The Boyfriend)

This is probably the internet’s most famous ‘real villain’ fan theory. Nate is consistently negative about Andy’s new appearance and career. Miranda is also negative towards Andy, but her end goal is to drive her to do better. Nate wants his girlfriend to quit so he can monopolise her time. He seems willing to accept the ‘perks’ such as her new lingerie, though.

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) – Kirk, Pam, Sally, And Jerry

The group refuses to pay Leatherface’s brother (The Hitchhiker) for his photograph, and they then proceed to trespass on Leatherface’s land and threaten his family. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was filmed in 1974; however, if this was made in 2022, Leatherface would be totally vindicated under Texas’ famous Stand Your Ground law.

 1. Frozen (2013) – The Trolls

Everything that happens in Disney’s iconic film is because of the trolls’ actions. Fans pointed out that the trolls are evil in the original Hans Christian Anderson tale. They are why Elsa is forced to hide her powers and separate from Anna. But there’s more to this fan theory. The trolls kidnap Kristoff and raise him but still call him a ‘bit of a fixer-upper when he brings Anna to meet them. During the song, they try to marry the pair, suggesting they wanted Kristoff to rule with her all along. And they have the ability to brainwash Hans, which may explain his sudden change at the end of the film.

Some films are about perspective and have changed with the times; others have such complex characters that we can sympathise with everyone on screen. Because of this, lots more theories are flying around the internet (an honourable mention to Dolores from EncantoMaverick from Top Gun, and Gabriella/Troy from High School Musical). Do you have any others that should be on this list?
