'The Last Of Us' Episode 7 Spoiler Review
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE LAST OF US EPISODES 1- 7
The Last of Us continues to be an emotional rollercoaster. This week is no exception. The episode titled “Left Behind” was based on the DLC add-on for the first game and we saw a bit of Ellie before she met Joel. Bella Ramsey’s skills as an actor were demonstrated in this episode. Storm Reid also played Riley exceptionally well and made us all shed a tear.
The episode picked up where the last one left off. Joel and Ellie were in an abandoned house with Joel on the brink of death and Ellie doing everything she could to save him. Joel told Ellie to leave and go back to his brother Tommy. She stormed upstairs, and we got a flashback to her past.
RELATED:
Ellie was in a military school within the QZ, and she was not doing well. While she was extremely smart, her attitude wasn’t ideal. One night, her friend Riley returned while she is asleep and whisked her away to an adventure at a nearby abandoned mall. Thus far, we have seen how Ellis has been through a lot and is tougher than most 14-year-olds. However, this episode showed her just being a kid as she wandered through the mall with Riley, even for just one night. We saw the childlike wonder in her eyes as Riley lit up the mall. Ellie was able to forget about the apocalyptic situation for a little bit as she had fun on the escalator, rode the merry-go-round, and tried out the photo booth with Riley. She also got to play the arcade version of Mortal Kombat ll, which she had a poster of in her bedroom, and received the book of puns. It was one night when she got to experience what it was like to be a kid before the outbreak, and it was wonderful to see.
As we know from this show, that tragedy strikes in the happiest moments. Ellie and Riley had a massive argument when she discovered Riley’s plans with the Fireflies and how she was leaving for Atlanta. They reconciled when Ellie found Riley in a Halloween store. The two donned scary masks and danced. After being caught up in the moment, the two revealed their feelings to each other and shared a quick kiss. Their happiness was once again cut short when a runner attacked and both ended up getting bit. Ellie and Riley had a tearful reality check where they promised to not leave each other. If you've played the game, you know already know how this end. However, the episode did not show us how Ellie actually survived the bite. Hopefully, that would be addressed before the season is over.
The flashback ended, and Ellie decided she would not leave Joel to die. She did not want to experience loss again. She tore the house searching for something that she could use to save Joel, which she did. In another emotional moment, Joel held Ellie’s hand just like Riley did.
This was another story-heavy episode. The series’ strength lies in its story and proves that you do not need action-packed episodes to succeed. The actors were so excellent playing their parts in a so-far excellent series that is definitely one of the best video game adaptations ever. Those who played the game are familiar with what will happen, but those who have not are in for a ride.
The previews for next week's episode give us a glimpse of what Ellie and Joel are up against. We will also see Troy Baker, the original voice of Joel.
New episodes of The Last of Us release Sunday nights at 9 PM EST on HBO and HBO Max.
