WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE MANDALORIAN SEASONS 1 AND 2 AND THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT EPISODES 5- 7

Our favorite duo is finally back! After more than two years, The Mandalorian returns with a premiere that will have Star Wars fans more excited than ever for all of the references to other Star Wars content! The last time we saw Din Djarin and Grogu was in the season finale of The Book of Boba Fett. While the pair had parted ways in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, they did not stay apart for long. Djarin had been told that he could no longer be a Mandalorian until he bathed in the living waters of the mines of Mandalore and was challenged by Paz Vizsla for the Darksaber. It was also revealed that the Darksaber was forged thousands of years ago by Vizsla’s ancestor. After training with Luke for a short period of time, Grogu chose to leave to be with Djarin, knowing that this means he will never become a Jedi. The finale of The Book of Boba Fett saw the pair aid in Boba’s fight for control of Mos Espa and then begin their journey for Mandalore.

The Season 3 premiere started with an incredible sequence of events that left us wondering if we were seeing something new or a flashback. After the action-packed battle, we saw Djarin return to speak with the Armorer about returning to Mandalore. While she was the one who told him to return there, now she is trying to convince him not to, claiming that there is nothing left. Knowing that he could not do this alone, Djarin visited Greef Karga on Nevarro who now holds a prestigious position on the planet. We also discovered Cara Dune’s whereabouts, and it is done in a respectful way that makes sense for her character. Eagle-eyed fans would notice a reference to Star Wars Rebels early in the episode which left us wondering if we might see some of those characters make their way to the series! This episode saw the return of some favorite characters, especially one from Season 1, the introduction of a new villain, and a Djarin and Grogu bond that are stronger and closer than ever!

The premiere was visually stunning, and introduced enough background information for fans who did not watch Djarin’s three-episode stint on The Book of Boba Fett. I have so much respect for everyone involved with the show after seeing how they chose to explain Cara Dune’s absence. This was a major question that fans had going into the new season, and it was expertly handled. The episode moved at a quick but steady pace and focused heavily on sweet and funny moments between the returning and new characters. Grogu was the star of this episode and had us laughing until our sides hurt.  Everything was set up perfectly, and the final moments with an uncharacteristically pessimistic Bo-Katan gave the otherwise positive episode a slightly ominous tone, foreshadowing the journey that lies before Din Djarin and Grogu.

New episodes of The Mandalorian are available to stream Wednesdays on Disney+
