'Secret Invasion' Episode 3 Review

We are halfway done with Secret Invasion. This week's episode was much slower than the previous two but pushed the story further along and even had some shocking twists. Nick Fury and Talos also reunite to try and stop an air strike orchestrated by Gravik. This episode is great at showing Graviks power and that he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. It’s also terrifying to know that he can get the military to do his bidding and potentially cause even more harm. Nothing is as it seems, which makes it much harder to stop the Skrulls.

At the start, we are treated to a once again younger Nick Fury. He has his hair and a famous eyepatch. This scene feels like he just finished with Carol Danvers and the events of Captain Marvel. Her presence does feel missed, and she should’ve had a part in this show, especially because she also made the promise of finding the Skrulls a new home. Nick Fury and Talos eventually reunite and team up together to stop an airstrike from potentially causing World War III, which would’ve turned into a much bigger issue, than the Skrulls taking over. This show has a great way of keeping viewers on their toes with the endings. This episode is no different. Nick Fury’s wife gets something out of her safety deposit box and then makes a call, with a surprising voice on the other end.

Nick Fury and Talos are a great combination together. Both actors play off of each other well, as do their characters. Their motives are different, but in the end, they can come together to reach the same end goal. We also got to see more of Gi’ah, who seems to have become a bit disillusioned with the group she joined. She ends up helping her father, Talos. Earlier in the episode, she receives a burner phone from him, which she uses to tip them off about the airstrike. Later, she even ends up helping Fury and Talos with stopping it. She is eventually stopped by Gravik as she is trying to leave. Gi’ah is a great character and addition to the MCU, so the end of this episode is quite shocking.

This show has been a bit slower than previous Marvel shows. It has been marketed more as a spy thriller which is a first for Marvel. It does a good job of leaving viewers with questions and expectations that they will tune into the next episode to get their answers. It’s an interesting concept and is being executed well. There are some moments, however, where it would benefit from a faster pace. This episode was essential to the story and moved it along. This, however, was also the halfway point, and as a show that was marketed as a mini-series, it will be interesting to see how they wrap everything up. However it ends, hopefully, this won’t be the last time we see Nick Fury.
