'Secret Invasion' Episode 2 Review

Secrets, backstories, politics, and a familiar face all help create a great second episode of Secret Invasion. Episode 2, titled “Promises”, refreshes fans about Nick Fury’s history with the Skrulls. In the refresher, we are reminded of the promise Fury made to the Talos and Skrulls. We also get to see a young Gravik before he becomes the Skrull leader. The episode then picks up where the first episode left off and doesn’t hold anything back.

Nick Fury is on the run after the bombing incident in Moscow. He’s also the prime suspect, as he was seen where the bombing took place. With the help of Talos, he can escape for the time being. Here we get to learn more about Nick Fury, who even tells a story about when he was a kid. Talos also reveals a huge secret to Fury that makes him angry. As this show is heavily focused on Fury, it’s nice to get some backstory of what he was like as a kid. Later in the episode, Colonel Rhodes, played by Don Cheadle, shows up to defend the actions of Nick Fury in front of an audience of world leaders. He eventually meets Nick Fury, and the two of them, who once agreed on most things, are now on very different sides regarding how the invasion should be handled.

We see more of Gravik and him solidifying his power and control among the Skrulls. He meets with some world leaders who have a secret of their own. Further in the episode, one of his men is captured. Sonya Falsworth, played by Olivia Coleman, takes it into her own hands to torture the captured Skrull. This is a somewhat dark torture sequence, especially for a Marvel show. Olivia Coleman’s character is intriguing, as we don’t know much about her and what her motives are. She is, however, looking for information that Skrull seemed to provide for her. She also plays the role of Sonya exceptionally well, and I am excited to find out more about her character as the series progresses. Gravik gets word of the missing Skrull, and he and another shoot their way through to rescue him, which they end up doing, even if the Skrull meets his untimely end.

The show focuses heavily on Nick Fury. He is a character that played a central role in the early phases of the MCU until he took a backseat during Phase 4. Fans never got to know too much about him, and the closest thing to a backstory we have is his role in Captain Marvel. So it shouldn’t be a surprise when Secret Invasion drops an exciting reveal about Nick Fury at the end of the episode.

Secret Invasion episode 2 started slower than the first. We now, however, know our story and the players are set. It’s getting harder to know who you can trust and who is a Skrull. If the rest of the episodes are anything like the first two, then fans are in for a wild ride, and I cannot wait to see where the rest of the series goes
