Zack Snyder Discusses Why 'Rebel Moon' Is Not A 'Star Wars' Movie
Zack Snyder, well-known for his work as a director/producer in the DCU, almost made his way into one of the biggest franchises ever created: Star Wars (SW). Snyder tried to do something completely different from what was put out SW-related. This effort ended up being a completely separate project, even though he wanted to follow some of George Lucas’ ideas.
In 2013, Snyder pitched an idea to Disney right after its acquisition of Lucasfilm and the SW IP from Lucas. He saw this transition as a window of opportunity that could have made his project possible. According to Empire, Snyder sought to create his own “universe” within the existing one from SW, not utilizing any previously known characters. Thus, he tried to do his own thing - something that fans of the director have been used to for a while, hence his fame.

The same article points out that Snyder was actively trying to pursue another path, one that had not been taken before on that scale:
“The sale had just happened. There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.’ And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter.”
Besides this, he also tried to take SW back to its roots. George Lucas, when he first conceived SW and his original trilogy, used Akira Kurosawa’s movies as an inspiration for his own work.
The renowned Japanese director, who gave the world films like Seven Samurai (1954) and Ran (1985), helped shape both Lucas and Snyder. The latter, after having his project discarded by Disney, transformed his own Seven Samurai into what we know as the upcoming multi-film project, Rebel Moon. Its plot resembles Seven Samurai a lot, almost mirroring the 1954 action piece:
“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”
Snyder’s perspective does not match Disney’s currently. They face two problems. The first is that Disney is afraid of green-lighting trilogies and/or sagas after dividing SW’s fanbase a lot with the sequels. They made a lot of money with the movies, but the ideological impact did not correspond. The second factor is that while Disney focuses more and more on making Marvel and SW projects more accessible to different age groups of the population, he seems to be going in the opposite direction. His previous work with DC was marked by the heavy usage of dark filters for the footage. This stood out during the Justice League problem that opposed his ideas and views from Josh Wedon’s. His idea of making it R-rated puts him on a collision course with the mouse.
According to IMDB, Rebel Moon is expected to be released at the end of December 2023. The movie has a pretty solid cast in Sofia Boutella (Kingsman, Star Trek Beyond), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim), Anthony Hopkins (only in voice work), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, Guardians of the Galaxy) and many others.
