‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Season One Finale Mild Spoiler Review
Season one of Criminal Minds: Evolution has officially come to an end, and we have so many questions! Contains spoilers for episodes one - nine and minor spoilers for episode ten!
Last week’s episode showed Elias Voit AKA Sicarius manipulating his wife into thinking that the FBI, especially David Rossi, were the enemy. He convinced her that his tech job had gotten him into trouble with some dangerous people, and now the FBI was making them disappear. When Rossi tries to tell his wife the truth about her husband, she runs from the store in fear, and Elias videos and posts it to social media to make it look as though Rossi is harassing them. The Attorney General forces Prentiss to bench Rossi until the investigation is done, but Rossi goes to confront Elias and ends up getting himself kidnapped. Tyler tracks down the pair, and after learning what Elias did to his sister, he is shot and left for dead.
The finale starts with a flashback to February 2020 when Rossi and his wife Krystall are celebrating their wedding anniversary and discussing his future in the BAU. When we are taken back to the present, Rossi is in the storage container searching for things that he can use to escape. He discovers an oxygen monitor and realizes that he only has 82% left. Half of the team is at the Seattle field office briefing the local police and FBI about who Elias is and what he is capable of. Back in Quantico, the Attorney General is refusing to cooperate with Elias regardless of what that means for Rossi. Deputy Director Bailey is back, and he and Rebecca attempt to mediate between the Attorney General and the BAU. Elias calls, demanding to speak with Bailey, and uses the words “gold star” to set the rest of the episode into motion. Bailey relays this information to the Attorney General and Rebecca who are immediately shaken and confused by how he knows this information. They are willing to let him escape or kill him, his family, and Rossi to keep this secret.
RELATED:
Elias has gotten his family to California where he shows his wife fake passports that he has made for their family as well as multiple different types of currency that he has been saving. Her daughters do not trust their dad and are forcing her to reconsider her trust in her husband. After seeing Elias with a phone, which he had banned them from having, she finds a case filled with mementos from his kills. After she confronts Elias, he snaps, and if it weren’t for their daughters, he would have killed her.
Rossi uses his marine training to attempt to escape from the container, but when it fails, he gives up and resigns himself to die. Krystall appears to him and calls him out for giving up which gives him the chance to make peace with her passing by telling her all of the things that he has been bottling up. The team is able to track the family down, but when Bailey attempts to confront Voit, he is killed. Elias’ family is able to escape, and his wife convinces him to give her Rossi’s location. The final moments of the episode see Voit being brought into Quantico to meet with someone about Gold Star, but their identity is kept from the audience.
Criminal Minds: Evolution has been the resurgence that Criminal Minds needed. Fans were distraught when the show was originally canceled, and this new formatting has breathed new life into the beloved show. Elias was the perfect villain, even outdoing villains such as The Replicator and Billy Flynn portrayed by legendary actors Mark Hamill and Tim Curry, respectively. Bringing Elias into season two is a perfect choice, and I can’t wait to see if the next season will follow season one’s formatting or if it will go back to the classic format. I also can’t wait to see who Elias was meeting in those final moments! This would be the perfect way to bring back a classic character from the original show. Maybe Dr. Spencer Reid?
Season one of Criminal Minds: Evolution and all seasons of Criminal Minds are available to stream on Paramount+.
