WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE BAD BATCH SEASON 2, EPISODE 9

Nothing seems to be going right for the Bad Batch lately. Their homeworld of Kamino is destroyed. Most of their missions have ended in failure, and Echo has left to join Rex. Now in Episode 9, their mission almost ends in failure, their ship is taken, and they are stuck on a strange planet. The Bad Batch is broken, and tensions are high.

The episode begins with the remaining four members of the Batch venturing into a cave Cid has purchased in order to extract the highly explosive ipsium within the mine. It goes well until their ship is stolen. They then venture out to try and find a nearby town to rest and possibly find a new ship off the planet. On their way to the town, they almost get trampled by the local wildlife population and find refuge in a nearby cave. Their cache of ipsium explodes, collapsing the entrance. Trapped together, tension among the Batch comes to light. Omega, who has not taken Echo’s departure well, is told to “get over it” by Tech.

RELATED:

When she leaves to collect her thoughts, Omega finds more ipsium and starts to extract it when Tech finds her. It turns out, they both had the same idea to use the ipsium to explode their way out. Omega goes a bit too far and falls into the water at the bottom of the mine, and Tech follows her. They eventually reunite with Wrecker and Hunter and make their way out of the mine, and to a nearby town that has since been abandoned. They call Cid and ask her for help, but she says it will be a few days. The clones now have to survive until they can either get rescued or get their ship back.

Tensions are high in this episode. Tech is not happy that Wrecker let the ship get stolen, and Wrecker is not happy that the ipsium is left behind. Tech takes a more central role in this episode. Omega is still coming to terms with everything and is not taking any of the changes well. She misses Echo, and the Marauder, which has become her home. During their time together in the cavern, she and Tech talk it out. Omega learns that Tech cares about Echo and Crosshair but respects the choices they made. He just deals with it differently than she does. It is a tender moment between these two characters.

This episode shows us how the squad deals with grief. Omega gets emotional, others bicker, and some just try to accept it. It is great to the dept of these characters. There is still an underlying humor even though it is not as present as in previous episodes. It seems the season has taken a turn and things could get darker.

Storyline aside, the music and coloring in this episode were wonderful. The song that first played when the clones enter the cave, has a western flair to it that fits perfectly with the episode. The pretty coloring of the ipsium really made it stand out to viewers.

Last week, we were treated to two very emotional, plot-driven episodes. This week, the Bad Batch is on yet another mission for Cid. While it is nothing Earth-shattering, we get to see the group deal with the loss of Echo and how much it affects them beyond just being down one person on a mission. As the season continues, I have a feeling these filler episodes will mean something.
