‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Episode 8 Spoiler-Free Review
The newest episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution is here, and things are heating up! With only two episodes left in season one, the team is finally closing in on Sicarius. Contains spoilers for episodes one - seven!
Last week, we saw the return of the classic Criminal Minds episode formatting which I believe is what we can expect from season two. While this week’s episode went back to focusing on Sicarius, we did get to see more banter and laughter with the team which is another aspect of the original show that this show was missing. When we were reunited with the team back in episode one, they were broken, exhausted, and not really a team anymore. All of that has changed over the course of the season, and I couldn’t be more excited!
This week’s episode focused less on Tara and Garcia’s love lives and brought us back to JJ and Will’s family who we haven’t seen much of since episode five. Will is getting better, we hope, but their teenage son, Henry, steals the show with his detective skills after overhearing a bit of his parents’ conversation. Not only has he figured out their tells, but he also confronts them about the information he has gathered about what is going on with his dad. This feels like an ode to the original show in which Henry loved Reid and even dressed up as him for Halloween one year.
RELATED:
After Sicarius abandoned his family in the previous episode, he decides that he wants nothing more than to tell his wife the truth so that she and the girls can help overcome his desire to kill. He stalks and kidnaps a realtor who he feels is enough like his wife to help him. He forces her to role-play the scenario with him where he reveals who he is and what he does. We learn during this exchange that he is responsible for 61 deaths, and I’m assuming that does not include the people that his network has killed. After complying with his every order, she is told that she will be let go. Unfortunately, he reinstates the network instead and the team must race against the clock to find her before it’s too late.
The team has been working tirelessly to figure out the identity of Sicarius, and it doesn’t help that the Attorney General officially ruled the case closed last week. To avoid stepping on her toes, Prentiss brings in a federal agent from Raleigh who is working on Sicarius’ uncle’s case. He believes that this may be Sicarius, so they can operate under that guise for the time being.
While Sicarius believed that killing his uncle wouldn’t lead the team to him because he made it look natural, he was wrong. Once the team begins to dig into his uncle’s past, they not only discover his real name, Lee, but they also discover the importance of Second Street. Garcia revealed in episode six that every single victim of Sicarius had a connection to a second street, and now we know why. As the episode draws to a close, the stakes have never been higher, and Rossi may be in grave danger.
This week’s episode was a little slower than the previous episodes of this season. Although the stakes are higher than ever, it never felt like there was too much risk in anything the team was doing. The reintroduction of the classic formatting may be part of what is slowing down the pace, but I am excited to see what it means for season two. The episodes are doing a great job of moving the story along at a realistic pace and keeping the audience wanting to come back each week. After seeing this episode, I predict that the team will come face-to-face with Sicarius in episode nine. I am just hoping it doesn’t lead to the death or injury of any of the team.
