The hit Broadway musical, Wicked, will hit the silver screen everywhere this fall! The film and musical are based on The Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire, which began with the eponymous Wicked in 1995. The Wicked Years and its subsequent media are meant to be a prequel to the events in The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

The motion picture, Wicked, is the first of a two-part adaptation to be directed by Jon M. Chu. The movie focuses on Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, with Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, and Michelle Yeoh rounding out the main cast. The trailer for Wicked was released this week, which included “Popular,” sung by Grande, and “Defying Gravity,” sung by Erivo. An instrumental version of “Defying Gravity”  in the new trailer too.

A few members of the current Broadway cast for Wicked’s 20th anniversary season published a blind reaction on TikTok as they watched the new trailer. Their Green Team, including Mary Kate Morrissey (currently starring as Elphaba) and Lissa DeGuzman (one of the standbys for Elphaba), teared up seeing a young Elphaba outcast in the movie’s trailer. The actresses captioned their video by tagging Ervio and Grande with “Welcome to the sisterhood.”

Ariana Grande had previously commented on how much of a joy it’s been for her to step into Glinda’s famous shoes, “I love her so much. I’m going to take such good care of her.”

Wicked will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024. The second part will come out on November 26, 2025.
