Lights. Camera. Action. The sequel to the box office smash Joker (2019) has officially begun filming, and the first image is here.

Director Todd Phillips took to Instagram yesterday to post the first look at Joaquin Phoenix back in the role of the Clown Prince of Crime. The image shows Phoenix, once again, back to his low weight from the first film and having his face shaved by what appears to be a guard. When viewers last saw Arthur Fleck, he was in Arkham, running from guards after killing his therapist. His story may start here, but there’s no telling where it might go.

With only a small teaser and a few names announced for the cast, little to nothing is known about the film, as WB and Phillips have remained tight-lipped on the subject matter. What is known is that Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn, and Zazie Beetz will return as Sophie Dumond. This film will mark two firsts as it will be Phoenix’s first sequel in his career and will reportedly be DC’s first musical.

As the writer and in the director’s chair, Todd Phillips will reunite with Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and introduce Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn when Joker: Folie à Deux premieres in theaters on October 4, 2024.
