Not long after an article was written about CD Projekt Red claiming that work on Cyberpunk 2077 was done and that they were in full production on the next Witcher game, they revealed the first trailer for said game.

Last night was The Game Awards, the video game industry’s version of the Oscars. It’s a combination of awards and game announcements, and Geoff Keighley had previously said there would be huge announcements. That turned out to be true when he revealed the trailer for the next Witcher game: The Witcher 4.

The crowd applauded as the trailer revealed the protagonist to not be Geralt of Rivia, but rather his protégé, Ciri. Players who remember The Witcher 3 remember Ciri was a focus of Geralt’s main campaign, and she wishes to be a Witcher herself. It looks like her training took. As a side note, to become a witcher, there’s a pretty brutal ritual they have to undergo that breaks down their body after taking a series of potions. The body is then rebuilt stronger and faster, hence their superhuman power. Their eyes and bones undergo mutations as well. Lastly, they are rendered infertile from the process.

Fans of Geralt shouldn’t be upset, though. It was confirmed after the trailer debuted that Geralt will still be in the game, and to what extent it’s not known, but the protagonist is definitely Ciri.

Monster hunting seems to still be the main employ of witchers as Ciri heads into the woods to stop a young woman from being ritualistically sacrificed to a monster. She has the customary silver sword of the witcher (silver harms monsters) and uses the quick spells that witchers can call forth, like a shield. What will be interesting this time around is that Ciri has Elder blood in her, which allows her to wield magic.

No release date was specified, however, so it will likely be some time before it is released.
