The Soundtrack For 'Star Wars Outlaws' Is Different From The 'Star Wars' Music Fans Are Used To
The release date for Massive Entertainment’s upcoming game, Star Wars: Outlaws, is approaching. The project’s lead composer is Wilbert Roget II; he’s known for projects such as Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (2014), Call of Duty: WWII (2017), and Mortal Kombat 11 (2019). The music for Outlaws will be something special, shaking up the status quo of Star Wars music. In an interview with NME, the composer discussed how this game’s soundtrack will differ from other Star Wars pieces.
The soundtrack goals of this project met the composer’s career aspirations, “After I finished Vader Immortal, I wanted my career to take a different path. I was satisfied and happy to move on from doing that John Williams sound.” He continued, “But when Outlaws showed up, the team said, ‘No, we don’t necessarily want that. There are no Jedi or Sith. It’s all about the scoundrel experience. This is something different from what we’ve had in Star Wars in the past, and we don’t want that same sound from the movies, we want something new.’ So I decided to test that.” He had some freedom to shake things up a bit.

Surrounding the actual music, Roget explained, “It starts with a gun cocking, then I layered in the sound of coins hitting each other in midair, then it goes into trap beat – this aggressive, 808 distorted bass. And there’s some Spanish influence guitar because she’s an outlaw and I wanted that Western vibe, and the melody comes from an electric violin, not exactly the most Star Wars-sounding thing ever.” It isn’t all unfamiliar music, as the composer explained, “Eventually, there’s an orchestra playing the heroic, space opera – sounding a little bit like John Williams, but the core of it is unique to the character and the game.”
Star Wars: Outlaws will be released on August 30, 2024. It will be available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Set in 3 ABY, the open-world game will follow scoundrel Kay Vess as she works out a massive heist to pay debts with a crime syndicate. The content will be story-driven, but there will be plenty of actions for the player to take. It was created using the Snowdrop engine.
