The Chief Technology Officer Of Streaming At Disney Has Left

Just like other major technology and entertainment companies during the last few months, Disney’s time for cuts has come. The latest victim is Jeremy Doig, who worked as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Streaming for Disney since March 2022. Doig’s departure leaves a large hole inside the company, despite his position being promptly filled by Aaron LeBerge. Before working for Disney, Doig had worked at Google for 18 years. There he was at the forefront of online video technology for both Google Chrome and YouTube.

According to a Hollywood Reporter article from 2022, Doig was seen as an extremely relevant and important member to have. Michael Paull, who at that time was the president of Disney Streaming, mentioned how much hiring Jeremy meant for them: Jeremy, according to Paull, was seen as “a true visionary that has sat at the forefront of making online video streaming possible in his nearly 30-year career at the intersection of technology and media.”

He was considered an essential piece inside Disney, he was an asset. His departure, though, is part of a bigger picture. With the intent of creating a bigger profit share for its investors and shareholders, the company has cut 7000 jobs. This is a direct result of Bob Iger’s return to Disney, leading to a restructuring within the building. Doig was not alone and will be followed by fellow executive Rebecca Campbell. She will leave her position as Chairman of International Content and Operations in June.

Benzinga highlights this point by mentioning Iger’s comments about these changes. According to him,

We believe the work we are doing to reshape our company around creativity while reducing expenses, will lead to sustained growth and profitability for our streaming business, better position us to weather future disruption and global economic challenges, and deliver value for our shareholders.”

Therefore, Disney’s internal changes will probably generate more headlines down the stretch. Doig, Campbell, and thousands of others are cogs feeding the entertainment monster that is Disney currently. By holding onto huge Intellectual properties like Marvel and Star Wars, Iger seems to be trying to cut costs in all possible places.
