The first five books of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series are to be released as a boxed set in October. And they have some stunning new covers designed by Tim Green, David G. Stevenson, and linocut artist Mark Seekins.

As revealed by Martin, the three developed sketches of the cover art, were carved into blocks of linoleum. The raised areas were then inked and pressed onto paper, with each colour layer requiring a separate block. The final covers use photographs of the finished prints. This style, Martin says, creates “a certain starkness that seemed to fit the stories” with “a long history to the art form that felt right for this world.”

All five books will come in a black case adorned with gold lettering. The design for this case emphasizes the series name, with a sigil created using the initials of the series name. A Song of Ice and Fire becomes ASOIAF, with two letters per row with the full name wrapped around it in a square. The initials of the name are also used on the cover of the books, tying them all to the series name.

For display purposes, the linocut designs extend to the spine of the books. So be on the lookout for these stunning designs when they arrive at bookstores and online retailers sometime in October.
