'Star Trek: Below Decks' Makes 'Deep Space 9' Fan Ship Canon
Star Trek: Lower Decks has brought a popular ship, Garashir, into canon in the multiversal episode, Fissure Quest. Doctor Bashir and Garak, the slightly dodgy tailor, are shown as a bantering couple. Other ex-cast members make an appearance, including Garrett Wang (Harry Kim from Star Trek: Voyager), Jolene Blalock (T’Pol from Star Trek: Enterprise) and Alfre Woodard (Lily Sloane from Star Trek: First Contact.)
The fan coupling of Garak and Dr Bashir harks back to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and draws on the complex friendship between the two. The show did not have any queer characters, but both Bashir and Garak were a little flirtatious. From their unintentional chemistry, the fandom rose. The pairing is the most popular DS9 couple on fanfiction (Yes, more than Odo and Kira) site AO3, with over 5,800 works.
The first openly gay character did not appear until 2017 on Star Trek: Discovery (Paul Stamets and Dr. Hugh Culber), a full eighteen years after the last episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine aired. However, Andrew Robinson, who played Elim Garak, has often said in interviews that he portrayed Garak as not having a gender-specific sexual preference. Now Star Trek: Lower Decks has corrected an imbalance in the original show, and a lot of millennials can say they knew it was always meant to be.
