When it was revealed that Amazon Prime would be doing a Lord of the Rings television show and they were aiming for five seasons, it seemed like quite the stretch, especially with the propensity for streaming studios to cancel shows after a single season.

Here we are, two seasons down for The Rings of Power, and showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne will get to see their vision to fruition. Recently, they sat down with Rotem Rusak of The Nerdist to talk about season two and season three.

One of the first things they discussed with McKay and Payne was some timeline coherency. According to the lore, Sauron technically forges the One Ring before the siege of Eregion, implying that the One Ring was forged by the end of season two since Eregion has now fallen. Payne and McKay clarified that the One Ring is, in fact, not forged yet, and Sauron is kind of on his own now because Celebrimbor is dead, and he doesn’t have the knowledge to do it on his own yet. They’re using the poem about the Ring for the order, starting with the three elven rings, then they made the seven dwarven rings, and as we know, the nine rings for men were made by the end of the season.

They went on to discuss Sauron’s relationship with Morgoth and the abusive nature of that, as revealed by Sauron, comparing it to two people with competing designs of conquest. That kind of relationship was one filled with pain. Another relationship they brought up was Galadriel and Celeborn’s, as well as her relationship with Elrond. They were rather tight-lipped on Celeborn and their daughter Celebrian (who ends up marrying Elrond), only to say that Celebrian is not born yet. McKay and Payne did say they had fun coming up with the kiss that Elrond and Galadriel share, comparing it to Back to the Future when Marty kisses his mom.

Ultimately, it looks like they are going to have to play with time in the next season because they talked about the Fall of Numenor and the Last Alliance, mentioning how entire cities have to be built before we see that. By the sound of it, it looks like there’s going to have to be some time skips in store.  Either way, it’s likely to be some time before we see season three.

The first two seasons are available on Prime Video.
