CD Projekt Red's Plans For 'The Witcher 4' And Beyond
CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher IV is meant to usher in a new era of the game franchise. Geralt’s adoptive daughter, Ciri, first appeared in the previous installment; Geralt searched for her throughout the game and faced the Wild Hunt with her help. The focus on Geralt has ended, at least for now, and Ciri will be the main character in the upcoming game and beyond. In an interview with IGN, the developers spoke about their goals for the plot and the gameplay.
The Witcher IV director Sebastian Kalemba described Ciri as a character, “I love this grit in her. She's almost obsessed with the way she lives … She's less calculating, following her heart, her passion, her gut feel.” The character is more developed than in the previous game, but she is still coming into her own. Kalemba explained the angle that the company is aiming for with the character, “We want to let players try to define her. She's about to form her own codex on her own terms. The way she actually deals with the monsters, the way she deals with quests, the adventures, it's her own unique way.”

The director broached the subject of actual gameplay mechanics, “We want to put player agency at the center.” He continued, “We create story-driven games, so we want to make sure that people that buy games for story, they'll be able to experience the story in their own way and they will be simply able to approach it. But people that are looking for specific challenges, they will also be able to experience the story in a challenging way.” The executive producer of the game, Małgorzata Mitręga, commented on the market they are aiming for, “We want to aim for the new players. The wider audience, and also the people that know the franchise but who maybe do not play our games.”
The Witcher game franchise is based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski. There is no release date for The Witcher IV at this time. The company is taking time to get the game right, and it is still in production. This installment marks the newest saga of the game franchise, focusing on Ciri as she develops and establishes herself. The game is being made with Unreal Engine 5, the most recent edition of Epic Games’ CG game engine.
