The highly anticipated series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is finally here! The series follows a group of kids who discover a mystery on their planet and stumble into an adventure that takes them across the galaxy. It wasn’t always meant to be a show, however. Series creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford spoke with TVLine about the conception of Skeleton Crew and the energy they wanted to bring to their addition to the Star Wars universe.

When asked how the show came to be, Watts explained, “I mean, it started as just a simple pitch, which is a group of kids that don’t really know that they’re in the Star Wars galaxy, get lost in the Star Wars galaxy and try to find their way home.” Ford continued the line of thought, “It started with that, and then unpacking what all of the ramifications of that would be, and all the different worlds and things we’d have to create and who they would meet along the way.” Watts confirmed the original conceived format: “It was initially pitched to Lucasfilm as a film, and then I had to go make two Spider-Man movies, because the first one did all right.”

Fans have commented on how the tone and set-up of the series feels different compared to other Star Wars works. In response to this observation, Ford stated, “I think that Star Wars probably has a broader tone than people realize.” Watts followed, “What I like about Star Wars… is you can take any moment or any character in Star Wars, and because it feels like such a dense, complex, real galaxy, you can follow them home.”

With a universe and fandom as developed as Star Wars is, some people have expressed concern over their ability to enjoy it. Watts gave a firm statement expressing that there’s something for everyone in it:

“The main characters don’t really know anything about the Star Wars universe, either, so as a viewer, you don’t have to know anything about Star Wars to be on the journey with the kids… Our hope is that the people who don’t know anything and those that know everything are watching the show together and having their own unique conversation.”

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has officially premiered with the first two episodes on Disney+. Each episode will be released weekly every Monday. There will be eight episodes in total.
