Horror games are nothing new. Neither are horror games that have appearances from horror icons. However, in 2017, we were treated to a horror game that allowed you to be in your own Friday the 13th movie. Aptly called Friday the 13th: The Game, it was an online multiplayer game where players could play as either the poor teenagers getting slaughtered or Jason himself hunting the camp counselors. The game also had offline capabilities, which didn’t compare to the thrill of working with or avoiding other players online. Now, however, that’s ending for good.

The game itself was delisted from any game platforms such as Steam on December 31st of 2023, but anyone who had a copy was still able to play it. As with most instances like this, the issue boiled down to who was allowed to use the IP, and when that ran out, it was curtains for the game. On December 31st of 2024, the online servers for the game will be shut down for good. Offline play will remain available, but that’s like taking a burger and removing everything except the buns and lettuce. You still technically have a sandwich, but it’s not the same.

While Friday the 13th is seeing the last days of its life, other horror franchises are starting to follow the series into the world of video games. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was released in late 2023 to generally positive reviews, and we’re even seeing a pair of Halloween games coming up. And hey, there’s nothing saying that Jason can’t make his way into the world of video games again.
