When a character gets recast, things don’t always proceed smoothly. The Witcher is breaking this trend by giving Henry Cavill a proper sendoff before Liam Hemsworth takes over the role of Geralt of Rivia. In an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, writer and producer Lauren Hissrich said,  “Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honor that appropriately.” Originally, the production team was not planning on approaching Season 3 as a finale for Cavill. However, the storyline ended up flowing perfectly in that direction.

The upcoming season will be based on the fourth novel in author Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga, Time of Contempt. A major storyline will address how Cavill’s character will have to step away from his former stance of neutrality and choose a side in the ongoing conflict. Hissrich mentioned that “Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in Season 4,” and that he is “a slightly different Geralt than we expected.”

Long-time fans of the book series will appreciate the location of the Season 3 premiere. A good chunk of that character development will be set up in the ruins of Shaerrawedd, the site of an elven palace which originally appeared in Sapkowski’s third book, Blood of Elves. Hissrich noted that “this set is one of the biggest” they’ve made. She also added, “Episode 1's been done for ages, but it's taken that long to get this setting right. I think it's really important for the story.” Hissrich pointed out that the writers thought of introducing Shaerrawedd in Season 2, but the context did not feel right. Its appearance in Season 3 will now have a slightly different significance compared to in the book.

Cavill himself has shown the utmost professionalism and enthusiasm towards the future during this. When his departure was first announced, Cavill stated:

“As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Season 3 of The Witcher will be dropping on Netflix in the summer of 2023. In the meantime, The Witcher: Blood Origin, which is set a thousand years before the events of The Witcher, premieres on Netflix on December 25, 2022.

Keep an eye out for a specific release date, and catch Cavill’s heroic sendoff!
