Quentin Tarantino, one of the most famous directors in Hollywood is retiring. After four decades of writing and directing movies such as Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill (2003, 2004, 2006), Django Unchained (2012), and more recently Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), Tarantino is leaving filmmaking behind him. He has one last film project set to mark his departure, The Movie Critic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino has finished its script and filming will begin this fall.

The Movie Critic will be about Pauline Kael, a very influential movie critic of her time who was known for her aggressive stubbornness with editors and filmmakers she worked with. She also once briefly worked as a consultant for Paramount. Tarantino is known to admire her craft immensely.

Throughout his career, Tarantino directed a total of ten films, a goal he had set for himself when he was 60 years old. His departure is also related to his age, as he stated in an interview with Playboy that directors get worse at their craft as they get older:

“I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually, the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. I am all about my filmography, and one bad film f—s up three good ones. I don’t want that bad, out-of-touch comedy in my filmography, the movie that makes people think, ‘Oh man, he still thinks it’s 20 years ago.’ When directors get out-of-date, it’s not pretty.”

Nonetheless, we can't blame such an artist for wanting to leave on a high note. Tarantino has been a prolific filmmaker in recent decades, winning two Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay for Django: Unchained and Pulp Fiction. He is the type of director who pushes the creative boundaries of established film genres to create a truly unique film.
