Magic: The Gathering fans have something new to look forward to. Wizards of the Coast is rolling out another massive crossover under the Universes Beyond series, this time with The Lord of the Rings. In an exclusive with IGN, they shared details about the cards themselves as well as the thought process behind the artwork.

The particular deck called The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth will be legal in the Modern format of Magic and will have a total of 281 regular cards. Some of the cards have been revealed along with their art. The One Ring, illustrated by Veli Nystrom, provides protection but triggers damage to the user the more they play it. Gandalf the Grey card, illustrated by Aaron Miller, gives the player several options including dealing damage to their opponents or placing him at the top of their deck. The final sneak peek showed off basic land cards based on Middle-earth.

Art Director Ovidio Cartagena gave some insight into making the characters their own for the card designs:

“The main challenge was balancing the familiarity, timelessness, and deep reverence of the original Lord of the Rings with a modern sensibility.”

He believes that the team has designed something balanced and “creates a deep, immersive experience that fans of both Magic and The Lord of the Rings will love.”

The entire crossover will be released on June 23rd, and it is currently available for pre-order.
