Sony, the massive entertainment company, has potentially become the next victim of a ransomware attack. The ransomware group Ransomed.vc has claimed credit for compromising the company’s entire systems.  Ransomed.vc has been making a name for itself since early September, putting the group at a relatively young age, though its members have likely been around in some form or fashion for a bit. The group is looking for a buyer for the data and put a September 28 deadline into place.

Cyber Security Connect asserts that this group has presented proof-of-hack data, including a file tree showing a preview of the compromised data; the size and detail of the proof data is rather small within the context of Sony’s systems. The group released the following statement regarding the attack (via Cyber Security Connect):

“We have successfully compromissed [sic] all of sony systems. We won’t ransom them! We will sell the data. Due to Sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE.”

RELATED:

Ransomware is essentially a type of attack targeting a person’s data, locking the person out from accessing said data and/or device until the ransom demands are met. Should the demands not be met, the data could be lost forever with a bricked device, or the data could be sold or leaked. As technology continues to evolve, so do these attacks; they get trickier to handle, the data being stolen and at risk of being sold off should demands not be met or the attacker chooses a different outcome following payment.

Sony as a company is acting on the situation, though to what degree is unknown. In a statement given to IGN, Sony said, “We are currently investigating the situation, and we have no further comment at this time.” More details are sure to come out as this situation develops. Considering the listed deadline from the ransomware group, the wait may not be long.
