Critics Choice Association To Bestow A Seal Of Female Empowerment In Entertainment On 'Ahsoka'
The new Disney+ series, Ahsoka, featuring the further adventures of Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, is not only winning over Star Wars fans but also organizations such as the Critics Choice Association, which recently announced that it will be bestowing a Seal of Female Empowerment in Entertainment (SOFEE) on the series. The Women’s Committee of the Association has announced that they will be honoring the series with this distinction due to it “illuminating the female experience and perspective through authentically told female-driven stories.” The Critics Choice Association, established in 2019, is the largest organization of critics in the United States and Canada, including 580 media critics and entertainment journalists.
Qualifying projects for a SOFEE include having a prominent female character arc, women receiving an equal amount of screen time to men, and passing elements of the so-called Bechdel Test, an informal test developed by a popular cartoonist in the 1980s that became widely discussed in the early 2000s. The test helps with determining the level of representation of women featured in media. The rubric used by the Association can be found at the following site: Critics Choice. Ahsoka scored a perfect numerical score using the above rubric.
Carrie Beck, EVP, of Live Action Development and Production at Lucasfilm praised the Association’s decision: “Thank you to the CCA for acknowledging ‘Ahsoka’ with this seal, and recognizing our incredibly dedicated and collaborative creative team.”
Tara McNamara, Chair, Critics Choice Association Women's Committee explained that SOFEE is awarded as a recognition with "digital assets that showrunners/filmmakers may use as they wish." While there is no official award ceremony, they make the announcement proudly and publicly on the Critics Choice Association's social media and website.
Ahsoka is currently streaming weekly on Disney+.
